Il mito del cantiere Riva ha inizio sulle sponde del lago di Como, a Laglio, nel 1842. Quasi per caso, quando un pescatore proveniente da Sarnico, borgo del lago d’Iseo in provincia di Bergamo, nota come il giovane Pietro Riva, appena ventenne, sta riparando la sua barca rovinata da un carico di mattoni. Vista la maestria del ragazzo, il pescatore propone a Pietro di recarsi a Sarnico per riparare due barche danneggiate dalla piena del fiume Oglio, che aveva scagliato gli scafi contro le pietre del greto. Il superamento delle settanta miglia che separano i due laghi segnano l’emancipazione del giovane Pietro e la nascita della storia dei cantieri Riva.
