Progettata da Dante Giacosa, a capo dell’ufficio tecnico Fiat, rappresenta per l’Italia del dopoguerra il sogno del benessere diffuso, della tranquillità sociale, che si inizia a intravedere in quegli anni di fine '50. La 500 si presenta così sul mercato fatto di operai e “proletari” che sognano di sostituire la “Vespa” o la "Lambretta" con una vera automobile ma anche di una classe sociale media e borghese che cerca una piccola auto per le donne e i figli neopatentati. La genesi della 500 è lunga e complessa, nonostante l'auto sia semplice e di piccole dimensioni. L'idea di una utilitaria Fiat risale a molto tempo prima, dal concetto di "auto per tutti" che evolve con la Balilla prima e la 500 “Topolino” poi. Una macchina simbolo del made in Italy che continua fino ai giorni nostri.
