l Barolo nasce nelle langhe, termine che secondo alcuni studiosi deriverebbe da "Langues" che non sono altro che delle lingue di terra che si estendono in un vivace gioco di profili, modulati dal mutare delle stagioni. Il terreno Tortoniano è caratterizzato da alternanze di marne e sabbie stratificate; le prime sono di colore grigio-azzurro, non molto resistenti e danno luogo a colline biancheggianti piuttosto basse e rotondeggianti. Le marne sono molto favorevoli alla coltivazione della vite. Il barolo nasce nel cuore delle colline di Langa, a pochi chilometri a sud della città di Alba, nel territorio di 11 Comuni che si inseguono in un suggestivo itinerario di colline sorvegliate da imponenti castelli medioevali, fra cui quello di Barolo, che ha dato il nome al vino oggi celebre in tutto il mondo.
